China has announced a seven point one percent increase in defence budget this year citing escalating regional and global threats.

Speaking at the opening of the annual meeting of China's parliament, Premier Li Keqiang said China's armed forces should devote greater energy to training under combat conditions and boost combat preparedness.

He said China is working to expand and boost its military activities and presence in the South China Sea and looking further abroad.
