Info Minister calls for ensuring accuracy in news reporting

Caretaker Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi has emphasized the necessity of ensuring accuracy in news reporting and content dissemination. In an interview with private TV channel, he said notices have been issued to various journalists, YouTubers and political figures for launching propaganda on social media over alleged harassment. He said a total of 32 journalists, influential YouTubers, and 22 political figures have received official notices from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) aiming to curb the rising tide of false narratives and social media misconduct. He said the FIA is legally empowered to issue notices to those who are violating the law and the Constitution. Information Minister urged the recipients of notices to present their stance on the specified date, ensuring a fair and transparent dialogue regarding the allegations. Acknowledging the right to criticize protected under Article 19 of the Constitution, Murtaza Solangi underlined the need of tackling t he spread of misinformation on social media, which is having detrimental impact on public discourse and national harmony. He said that no individual is above the law, and anyone found in violation should face legal consequences. In response to concerns about the accuracy of news in the media, Murtaza Solangi gave reference of the existing gatekeeping system, which ensures verification before news is published. Highlighting the authority of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the Information Minister warned that the PTA holds the power to shut down websites found in violation of the law, and emphasized the need for adherence to legal standards.
