Tashkent: Pakistan and Uzbekistan have reaffirmed their commitment to further boost bilateral cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, regional connectivity, energy, mining, culture, and agriculture. The resolve was expressed during a joint news conference of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent on Wednesday.
According to Radio Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that the relations between the two countries are moving in the right direction. He emphasized the need to further strengthen historical and cultural relations, advocating for new avenues to enhance trade and economic cooperation. The Prime Minister highlighted the strong partnership between the two nations as beneficial for both countries and the region's development and prosperity.
Highlighting the achievements of the current government, Shehbaz Sharif noted improvements in Pakistan's economy over the past year, including a decrease in the inflation rate to 2.4 percent, a reduction in the interest rate to 12 percent, and a rise in exports, particularly in the IT sector. He assured the Uzbek President of support in establishing the Trans-Afghan Railways project, which he described as a regional game changer.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for visiting Uzbekistan and engaging in fruitful negotiations. He acknowledged Pakistan as a tested ally and partner with a growing international reputation. Lauding Shehbaz Sharif's efforts, the Uzbek President praised his work to ensure peace, stability, and economic growth in Pakistan despite global challenges.
The President noted the dynamic development of relations between Uzbekistan and Pakistan, highlighting the effective functioning of the inter-governmental commission and successful organization of political consultations, business events, and exhibitions. He mentioned the visit of a large delegation of Pakistani companies to Uzbekistan for dialogues on partnership agreements and industry development.
President Mirziyoyev stated that Prime Minister Sharif's visit would open a new chapter in the expansion of their strategic partnership. He confirmed a strong commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship and announced the establishment of the Pakistan-Uzbekistan High-Level Strategic Council. Addressing the situation in Afghanistan, he noted a shared approach towards contributing to social development and resolving the Palestine issue. Additionally, the President announced the formation of a separate committee on the Trans-Afghan Railways project and accepted an invitation to visit Pakistan extended by Prime Minister Sharif.
