Pakistan Calls for Diplomacy in Addressing Iran’s Nuclear Issue

Islamabad: Pakistan has warned that snapback sanctions on Iran would derail diplomacy and further destabilize the region.

According to Radio Pakistan, this statement was made by Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, during a UN Security Council meeting following the Council's vote on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He emphasized the importance of allowing room for dialogue and negotiating a settlement within the JCPOA framework, warning that re-imposing UN sanctions on Iran would complicate the situation, harden positions, and divert efforts from reaching an amicable resolution.

The Ambassador outlined Pakistan's position, which is based on four guiding principles: creating space for diplomacy to succeed, the necessity of avoiding confrontation, and preserving the integrity of the JCPOA and Resolution 2231. He described these as the foundation for achieving an amicable resolution until a successor agreement is established.

Asim Iftikhar, representing an immediate neighbor and friend of Iran, cautioned against actions that could worsen instability in an already crisis-laden region. He stressed that diplomacy and dialogue should remain at the forefront of international efforts.

The Ambassador reaffirmed that Pakistan will continue to advocate for cooperation, expressing confidence that with political will and prudence, the JCPOA framework can once again contribute to sustaining peace, security, and much-needed stability.
