Pakistan Voices Concern Over Proposed Changes to UNMISS Mandate and Structure

Pakistan: Pakistan has voiced concern over proposed changes to the mandate and structure of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

According to Radio Pakistan, the concerns were expressed by Pakistan's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, while voting in favor of the UN Security Council resolution renewing the mandate of UNMISS.

The Ambassador highlighted that the proposed reduction of the troop ceiling to 12,500 is not justified given the deteriorating political and security situation in South Sudan. He emphasized that the Mission continues to have extensive responsibilities, especially in the protection of civilians and ensuring humanitarian access across a vast geographic area, tasks that require a robust and sustained presence.
