Peru declares nationwide state of emergency amid protests

In Peru, a nationwide state of emergency has been declared over violent protests against the ouster and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo.

Defense Minister announced emergency to allow soldiers to assist police in maintaining public safety.

Castillo's supporters took to the streets and set up roadblocks countrywide in protests that have also left seven people killed as they demand his release and the holding of early elections.
