Baku: A high-level six-member Pakistani delegation led by Prime Minister of Pakistan's Coordinator Romina Khurshid Alam called on COP29 President and Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev to discuss various matters of bilateral interest, including working together for common environmental sustainability and climate resilience building goals. According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister's climate aide particularly appreciated the COP29 presidency and congratulated Mukhtar Babayev on behalf of the Pakistani government for the successful arrangement of the 29th Session of the Conference of Parties in Baku. The event is being attended by delegations from over 196 countries, negotiating on matters related to climate finance, transfer of technology, and capacity building. Romina Khurshid Alam also lauded the participation of the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister in the high-level Climate Finance RoundTable organized by Pakistan on the 12th of this month. This roundtable was preside d over by Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif at the COP29 venue in Baku. She highlighted that Pakistan, despite contributing less than one percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, is among the world's most climate-vulnerable countries due to its geography, economic dependencies, and limited adaptive capacity. The Pakistani delegation at COP29 is making all-out efforts to strengthen international partnerships with both developed and developing countries, pushing for enhanced global cooperation and collaboration on vital issues such as the transfer of climate finance, technology, and technical know-how from the global north to the global south. Romina Khurshid also informed that Pakistan plans to hold a conference of the Vulnerable Twenty Group (V20) countries in the first quarter of next year. This conference will bring 68 member countries together to share knowledge and experiences about common climate risks, their impacts, coping strategies, and possible funding avenues to meet the growing climate finance needs to tackle climate change effects on agriculture, water, energy, and infrastructure. In his remarks, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev thanked the PM's coordinator on climate change, Romina Khurshid Alam, and assured his government's all-out support and cooperation in tackling core climate risks in Pakistan. He emphasized helping build climate resilience for the people of Pakistan and their livelihoods. Both sides expressed hope that the rich countries would not leave the COP29 global climate talks inconclusive and would commit to as well as provide more funding to meet the climate finance needs of developing countries.
