Lahore: A seminar on promoting localized strategies for smog mitigation was held at the Institute of Energy and Environmental Engineering, University of the Punjab, in Lahore.
According to Radio Pakistan, the seminar was organized by the Rural Community Development Society in cooperation with Welthungerhilfe. It witnessed the participation of over 250 individuals, including students, faculty members, civil society representatives, media personnel, and government officials. The event aimed to deepen students' understanding of the causes, consequences, and adverse impacts of smog on health, the environment, and quality of life to enable their contribution to smog mitigation efforts.
Experts from academia, researchers, Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), 1122 rescue, and city traffic police officials were invited to share their insights and strategies on smog mitigation. Mr. Qaisar Iqbal, Managing Director of RCDS, welcomed the participants and outlined the seminar's objectives, emphasizing the collaborative approach needed to tackle smog issues.
During his address, Qaisar Iqbal urged all stakeholders, including government authorities, the public, researchers, and students, to actively participate in environmental protection efforts. He stressed the importance of nationwide tree plantation initiatives as a significant measure against smog. Additionally, Dean Faculty of Geosciences Dr. Sajid Rashid Ahmad highlighted the necessity for increased awareness and education on smog mitigation strategies.
