Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman has termed approval of National Adaptation Plan on climate change by the Federal Cabinet as a great achievement of the Ministry of Climate Change.
Addressing a news conference in Islamabad today, she said the Plan stresses on joint efforts to address the climate change issue in the country.
Sherry Rehman said due to climate change, Pakistan is facing risks of flooding, drought, Glacier lake Outburst Flood and melting of glaciers.
Highlighting key features of the National Adaptation Plan, she said the Ministry has devised a coordinated system, defining responsibilities of ministries, provinces and other mechanisms.
She said the document has provided guidelines to embed development planning for adaptation of climate change. She further said the document focuses on finding ways to handle climate change with nature based solutions.
The Minister said vulnerable segment of society was has been priority while devising this plan, which also highlights the importance the capacity building and knowledge regarding climate change.
Sherry Rehman said the document, providing ten points guideline, underscores the importance of climate smart municipal services and waste management to avoid flooding in the country.
She said social inclusion has been focused in the National Adaptation Plan. Modernizing early warning systems is imperative to handle climate-induced challenges.
Sherry Rehman said the plan also calls for modernizing the financing structure to address climate change as Pakistan needs to enhance its climate resilience with every passing year.
